Dewey’s Read-a-Thon – Progress

Hi y’all,

It’s here, it’s here! Dewey’s Read-a-Thon! The event I have been looking forward to for around 11 months. Can’t believe we now have to read for 24 hours straight. To minimalize the Dewey posts I am going to update this post through-out the Read-a-Thon. If you are in need of your very own personal cheerleader let me know in the comment section. We will make this work!

My goal is to finish 6 books, participate in all the mini-challenges (I didn’t do any of them last time around) and to stay awake for the entire 24 hours. Of course I am going to blog-hop a little to cheer you all on.

Number of books read: 0
Total time spent reading: 50 minutes

Current thoughts: I can’t believe I have never read this book before! I adore J.K.’s writing style and the extra notes of Professor Dumbledore give the book an extra dimension. Love it! A few people on Twitter have suggested the use of audiobooks. Hmm… food for thought.

Introductionary Questionnaire

  1. What fine part of the world are you reading from today?
I am from the Netherlands and I live in a town 30 minutes from The Hague.
  2. Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?
I am looking forward to The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs. I just love his humor and his enthousiasm for experiments.
  3. Which snack are you most looking forward to?
Hmm… my mom bought me some German sausages, I love those! Add a little mustard and a bun and you’re good to go. Great Read-a-Thon meal!
  4. Tell us a littlesomething about yourself!
Well, what do you want to know? My name is Kimberley, I am 23 years old and I am in the process of shedding all the extra pounds. I’ve started this blog to keep track of my journey. I have lost 23 kg’s so far by using Weight Watchers. I am in training to become a weightloss consultant and in September I am going to study nutrition and dietetics in The Hague to become a dietitian.
  5. If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to?
Last time I did not stay awake for the entire 24 hours, I really want to make it this time. It’s my personal goal!

Mini-challenges completed: 1

Current thoughts: I am having a hard time switching between reading and social media. I am trying to keep up with all of you, responding wherever I can but it sure is a challenge! I am skipping the second mini-challenge since it’s about poems… and let’s be honest for a second, I am not a talented poet at all. And by the way, I think I am behind on these challenges, aren’t I? Am I supposed to do the third challenge during this hour? I don’t have enough time left to read! It’s a good thing this Read-a-Thon lasts 24 hours.

Current thoughts: I am so into ‘Dead Ever After’ by Charlaine Harris! In previous books I had a really hard time remembering stuff that had happened. But this time Charlaine reminds us of all the important facts perfectly well and I can’t help but wonder who Sookie will end up with. What’s your guess? I think it’s going to be Sam… yup. But I am not going to share any spoilers, ’cause where’s the fun in that?

My neighbours are having a party and I really hope they won’t turn on any music. I can not read with music on the background! So far I am doing great. I don’t feel too tired but my back is still hurting. I am going to walk around a little with my Bebook in my hand. Let’s hope I won’t drop the damn thing…

On the left ‘Dead Ever After’ by Charlaine Harris. I really dislike this cover, I would have prefered to own the animated cover. And on the right you can see one of my favorite bookmarks from Hatchard’s (a very populair bookstore in London). I collect bookmarks and although this bookmark was free I am so happy with it. It reminds me of a great trip with my mom.

Hour 12; 1 am – 2 am

I haven’t read a single page. I have been to busy with social media, you guys are amazing!

Mini-Challenge: Picture it!

reading nookMy reading nook, I adore all of my books though I probably own more e-books than paper versions, haha. The entire back of this Ikea case is packed! By the way, all pictures have been taken with my very old Iphone. In other words, sorry for the crappy quality.

  1. I’ve been curious about Beetle the Bard. How do you like it? Perhaps I am not a true Potterhead for not reading yet. 😉 Good luck in the Read-a-thon Kimberley!!

    • I felt exactly the same. I had it on my shelf for such a long time but it just didn’t appeal to me. Because I needed a short book for this Read-a-Thon I decided to go for it anyway, and I love it! It’s a great addition to the HP books and I can’t wait to read the other ones aswell. The added notes by Pr. Dumbledore give the book a little extra :D. And thank you Sarah, you too of course! Happy reading :D.

  2. Hi Kimberley! Thanks for stopping by and cheering for me, we can do this! 🙂

I’ve never heard of A.J. Jacobs, maybe that’s someone I should look up.

Keep up the great work and I will be back again in a few hours.

    • Hi Becky, you’re welcome and of course we can! 😀 He is a great writer and in his books he writes about his experiments. During one experiment he tried to become as healthy as he could and dedicated two years of his life to this! But because he is very down-to-earth and has a great sense of humor it’s so much fun to read. Even if you’re not that interested in the subject of his project. Happy reading! 😀

    • Thank you Rachael, you too :D. Read-a-Thons are so much fun! I am sure you will want to participate in every edition after this. Happy reading! 😀

    • Thank you! 😀 I love the fact that you couldn’t stop reading ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ and skipped social media updates. Ha, I might have to do that too. ‘Dead Ever After’ is getting really interesting :D. Keep going girl!

  3. You’re doing great, Kimberley! Don’t stress over the social media updates. Just have fun! I only update my blog every 2 or 3 hours (no Twitter, Tumblr, or anything else), leave a few comments, then get right back to reading. Also, I normally only participate in 3 or 4 mini-challenges per RAT. It just gets too overwhelming otherwise (and takes time away from READING!)

    • Thank you Sherry Ann! Your comment cheers me up :D. I felt a little un-social for not participating a whole lot in the cheering part of the Read-a-Ton. But you’re right of course. It’s all about the reading and I need to enjoy it! So I am going to stop stressing, haha :D. Thanks again and happy reading!

  4. Switching books is always a good idea after a little while to keep you sharp! Looks like you are doing really great. Readathon, Readathon, Rah-Rah-Readathon! 🙂 Keep going Kimberley! I’m with you on the aching bones, I have switched sitting positions about five different times although I’m still sitting in the same place just in different postures, LOL.

    • Hi Becky! 😀 It sure has been a good idea. I feel a lot better now. So far I am doing good, I hope I can keep that up! Haha, that sounds so familiair. I always have a favorite reading spot and refuse to leave it, haha. Keep up the good work!

  5. It looks like you’re doing great so far! I still can’t believe you have Dead Ever After! I can’t wait to find out who Sookie ends up with, but I doubt it’s either of my choices (Quinn and Alcide).

    • Yup, it’s going real good so far. I am kinda surprised actually, haha! I know, I can’t believe it either! It still don’t understand why my local bookstore can already sell them. And it’s not like they were promoting it, I really had to search for it. So weird, but I love it, haha! The more I read the less sure I am about Sookie’s love life. It wouldn’t surprise me if she ends up with someone we’ve never been introduced to, haha.

  6. Wow! Great goals! I’m not sure if I can stay up the whole 24 hours, but I’m hoping to make it to at least Hour 20! I haven’t been reading as much this time around, but I’m cheering and doing lots of mini-challenges (love challenges!). Looks like you are doing great. Keep up the awesomeness.

    • Hi Kristen! Staying awake for 20 hours is an amazing goal too! I really want to start on a few mini-challenges but I think I am going to save them for midnight. Thank you so much and good luck! 😀

    • Hi Ruth, thank you :D. I want to lose another 30 kg’s but I am really happy with all the progress I’ve made so far. Happy reading to you too! 😀

      • That happens. Last time I loved almost all my books, except the one my boyfriend suggested :/. He felt bad afterwards poor thing!

  7. Pictures are great, I always love a few picture. 🙂 They are a lot more time consuming though, but I think I will be happy I took so many when I look back on it and remissness. 😛

Glad to see you are still going strong!

    • I am going to post a few pics in the next 30 minutes :D. Thank you Becky, I really think I will be able to stay awake for the entire 24 hours this time.

  8. Glad to see you are still going Kimberley, this is so much fun!!! You seem to be making good progress with Charlaine Harris, how far through the book are you now? Half way?

    • I know right, told you! 😀 Though you can really tell most people are sleeping right now, haha. I am doing good, I am keeping a steady pace of 31 pages at a time, kinda creepy though. I am at 77%, I can’t wait to see who Sookie ends up with!

      • You did. 🙂 I know what you mean, it has gotten a bit quieter on the blogosphere, and in my own house too!
Ohh wow, what a great incentive to keep reading, you’re close to finishing 3 books, that’s AMAZING. 🙂 I have the fist 6 books in the series or something like that, but I haven’t read any of them yet.

      • I am so happy we’re still awake and reading! I can totally recommend the serie although some of the books are terrible. But the one I am reading now is superb, just like old times.

    • Hi Becky! Ah, I gave in :(. I fell asleep around 9 am and my mom decided to let me be since I need to work tomorrow. I am so proud of you for staying up all night. Great job!

      • Ohhh no, you made it most of the way though so that’s still really great! 🙂 And work definitely has to be a priority, as un-fun as it is. 😛

Thank you! I wish you a speedy sleep induced recovery.

  9. You’ve stayed awake? You’re a trooper! And you’ve got such a cozy reading nook! I hope you’re still going on and that you’re enjoying your current read. 😀

    • Hi Sherry Ann! It seems like an impossible task to say awake for 24 hours! But you’re right, next time I will be focusing on the nr of books instead of the hours I’m awake :D.
