Dewey’s Read-a-Thon

readathonstack

Hi y’all!

So, this is my very first blogpost. Yay for me! I worked like a maniac to get this blog up and running before Dewey’s Read-a-Thon is going to kick off and here it is. It’s not perfect yet, but it works for now. The main focus of this blog will lie on my weightloss journey which I see as my personal legend. For more background information scroll down and view the pages.

The first (and last) time I participated in Dewey’s Read-a-Thon was last year. I decided to participate 30 minutes before it started and it was crazy. The book blogging community is so supporting, trust me, this is one of those weekends you are more than willing to take a few days off for. I have been looking forward to this day for many months now (though there is another edition in October but I wasn’t able to participate then) and I can’t believe it’s finally here.

During Dewey’s Read-a-Thon you read for 24 hours straight and share your progress via your blog, Goodreads account, Twitter, etc. This reading marathon is perfect for me because I need to catch up on my Goodreads reading challenge. Right now I am 8 books behind on my goal of reading 50 books in 2013. I hope this Read-a-Thon will help me get back on track.

My reading stack contains:

  • The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling; the very first book I am going to read during this challenge. It’s a very short book which will make me feel as though I’ve accomplished something very early in the game.
  • Dead Ever After by Charlaine Harris; I know, I know! It isn’t even supposed to be in the stores yet! I can’t understand it either but this is the second time my local bookstore is selling the Sookie Stackhouse novels before the releasedate. I love the fact that I read the previous book during my last readathon.
  • The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs; I read his other book “Drop Dead Healthy” a few weeks ago and absolutely loved it. A.J. has got a great sense of humor and I love projects just as much as he does.
  • Maar buiten is het feest by Arthur Japin; I am Dutch and I just know I will not be able to read in English when I have been awake for 20 hours. This book is going to be my life saver! This author is brilliant and I can recommend ‘In Lucia’s Eyes’ to everyone.
  • Beautiful Darkness by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl; part two of the Caster Chronicles.
  • Online by Simone van der Vlught; another Dutch book and a really short one. It has around 60 pages and contains a few short stories.
  • Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay; since I am a huge fan of the tv-show I feel obligated to read the books. I hope it won’t be too different from the show.
  • The 4-Hour Work Week by Timothy Ferris; I am almost done with this book so I am going to finish it during the Read-a-Thon. Great book if you want to become a member of the ‘new rich’.

Dewey’s Read-a-Thon starts at 2 pm for me, and since it’s almost 11 pm I am going to get some sleep. Tomorrow is going to be crazy! I am going to try to stay awake for the entire 24 hours but I have no idea if I am capable of it.

Are you going to participate in Dewey’s Read-a-Thon? If so, what are you planning on reading?

  1. I am gonna drop by to see how you liked “Dead Ever After” by Charlaine Harris. I am ready to wrap up the series. Do you like the :True Blood” TV adaptation? Good luck and happy reading!

    • Please do, I am not a book blogger but I will do my best to write a good review :D. I am ready to wrap it up too. I feel like Charlaine has been influenced a little too much by the tv-show. I liked True Blood in the beginning but not anymore. I can’t deal with Tara being a vampire and all that stuff, haha. Good luck to you too, I’ll cheer you on during the day :D.

    • It’s your first time? Awesome! You are going to love it, guaranteed! I can’t wait to read ‘Dead Ever After’. I was in shock when I saw it in the bookstore. Happy reading and good luck! 😀

  2. You sound prepared! Good post. I, like you, am behind on my goodreads challenge. I like your mix of short stories. I want to read the Harry Potter short stories.

This is my first year & while its bad timing being stuck at a church gathering, I brought a couple of books with me to get started. Doesn’t help that I live in New Zealand and I have a start time of 1am!

Good luck & enjoy your books 🙂

    • You have to start at 1 am? Wow, that will be challenging! I am sure you are going to love the Read-a-Thon even if you can’t participate for the entire 24 hours. I love the Goodreads reading challenge but sometimes I want to smack myself in the head for wanting to read 50 books in one year, haha. I am not too sure if I can actually do that. Happy reading and good luck Sharlene :D.

  3. Good luck tomorrow! Actually, I guess it IS tomorrow your time, but I’m sure you’re fast asleep. My start time is bright and early at 6:00 a.m. Looks like you have some great books in your stack. Hope you have fun!

    • Thank you Sherry Ann! You too of course :D. You were right, I was fast asleep ;). But I woke up kinda early today out of excitement. I hope I can stay awake for the entire 24 hours, it’s going to be though. 6 am?! Wow, I don’t think I would be able to get up and read that early, haha. Happy reading!

  4. Hiya!
Good luck for the readathon, I’m participating too but this is my first year so I am super excited but also worried I won’t be up for the task.
I have wanted to read The tales of Beedle the Bard for ages so I hope you enjoy it. 🙂 Beautiful Darkness also came very close to being included in my readthon pile but I changed my mind at the last minute.

Hope you enjoy all your lovely books!

    • Hi Becky! 😀 You are going to love the Read-a-Thon, I am sure of it. Don’t worry too much about getting through the entire 24 hours. If you really need some sleep, just go get some. It’s the entire vibe that you need to experience and trust me, around nighttime you can actually tell most people are fast asleep. I needed a few hours of sleep the first time around but I want to try to make it this time. I’ll follow you through-out the Read-a-Thon and be your very own personal cheerleader ;). I am going to help you to stay awake, we can do this! I can’t wait to read The tales of Beedle the Bard, I haven’t read any of the short Harry Potter books before so it kinda feels like Christmas. There is still some Harry Potter thing left to discover ;). Thank you so much and happy reading!

  5. Hi, Kimberley!

The only A.J. Jacobs book I’ve read is “The Pleasures of Reading in an Age of Distraction” and I made it last for as long as I could, it was so nice to have a sensible person discussing books and reading habits every day.

I’m not a frequent blogger, but I love to join the book blog community every read-a-thon, ’cause everyone is so wonderfully happy to be reading and sharing books and snacking 😛

    Good luck tomorrow!

    • Hi Natalia! 😀 I haven’t read that one yet, I am going to add it to my list! I love his humor and the fact that he is so down-to-earth. The Read-a-Thon should be an international holiday, seriously. All the love and support is just amazing, it kinda feels like Christmas but then without all the stress of having to please others. Good luck during the Read-a-Thon, happy reading! 😀

      • Realized this a couple of minutes ago and came back running (figuratively) to set the record straight: I was totally mixing authors up! I was thinking on ALAN Jacobs, not A.J. Jacobs, sorry! :$

A.J. Jacobs is the author of The Know-it-all, right? I want to read that one *dies of shame*

    • Did you like the other novels from the Caster Chronicles? Too bad you didn’t like Beautiful Darkness :(. So far I am liking all the books that I’ve read (The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling and Dead Ever After by Charlaine Harris). Thank you Caro! 😀
